Different skin types and their characteristics

As skin grows older, we start to see differences in its appearance, not only differences in our own skins but differences between other people of the same age. The changes are determined fundamentally by our inherited skin type, its response to its environment, life style and sometimes our overall health. Nothing can alter the passage of time. But it is not just time that affects our skin, there are many other factors, such as our genes, but even more crucial is the way the skin and body is treated throughout life, our environment, stresses, diets, alcohol, smoking and general life styles all have a major impact on our skin.

When we say some one is in the 'bloom of youth' it is usually because the skin exudes a certain kind of radiance and vitality. From our skin's point of view this can diminish naturally over time

What we call 'radiance' is a visual effect, mostly from the face, which implies a perfectly normal well-functioning skin. When the bloom fades it is because with age the skin begins to lose its ability to retain moisture. It becomes drier and more flaky, and shows the results of exposure to the environment, stresses and life styles accumulated over many years.

If we say someone has 'good skin', it often means that that person was lucky in the lottery of gene inheritance and further has been able to protect and look after the skin well, and that it has not changed as much since childhood as has that of others.

In former times only the 'Wealthy' could concentrate on caring for their skins. Until this century most other people in the world worked on the land and were exposed to the elements which were very damaging to the skin and in many cases accelerated the effects of ageing to the skin. But modern day stressors are now equally as damaging to the skin as those exposed to harsher conditions of living in former times, modern stresses, pollution, unhealthy life styles all contribute to the condition of skin. In today’s world skin care is affordable by the majority, but skin care products that use ingredients that may not be as natural as they claim can equally be damaging to skin.
